The Magic of Storytime

I’ve always believed there’s something magical about gathering around a story. Whether it’s a room full of eager little faces or just one child cuddled up on the couch, reading aloud opens doors to new worlds and sparks the imagination like nothing else. I’ve seen it time and time again at my events—kids get so wrapped up in the stories, and suddenly, they’re not just listening; they’re living the adventure.

But did you know that reading aloud also has incredible benefits beyond the imagination? It’s true! Research shows that reading to children helps them develop language skills, build stronger emotional bonds, and even improve cognitive function. Here’s why I think every parent (and grandparent, teacher, or caregiver) should make storytime a regular part of their day.

1. It Builds Language Skills

Reading aloud introduces kids to a broader vocabulary and new sentence structures that they might not encounter in regular conversation. It’s how they learn the rhythm and flow of language, and it sets the foundation for their own reading and writing.

2. It’s a Bonding Experience

Whether it’s after dinner or right before bed, storytime creates a special moment between you and your child. You’re not just reading a book—you’re sharing an adventure, and those memories are priceless.

3. It Helps Kids Understand Their Emotions

Stories offer a safe way for kids to explore different feelings and situations. Through characters like Remy, children can learn about empathy, fear, bravery, and kindness. It’s amazing how much they absorb when they see their emotions mirrored in a story.

How You Can Make Storytime Special

  • Make it a routine: Pick a time that works best for you and stick to it. Consistency is key!

  • Get interactive: Ask your child to predict what will happen next or let them “read” with you by turning pages or pointing out characters.

  • Add voices: Don’t be afraid to get a little theatrical—kids love it when you bring characters to life with different voices.
